Music that I love, loathe and can't get enough of...in no particular order

Gavin Degraw - Not Over You

I especially love this song because you don’t often hear guys talking about how much they can’t believe they “let a good one go” or that they are actually sad about a break-up. Most of the time its about bagging b*tches and hoes, cheating on their current lovers or about making love to their current lovers. Guys rarely take us through the mourning process.

Most new songs also lack emotion. Its quite sad. I tend to go back decades in music when I want to feel emotion from the male perspective.

When I heard this gem from my Gavin, I immediately played it on repeat. Its about sad things, but doesn’t have the sad beat. I *love* that. In my mind the girl never comes back, but its ok because it forces Gavin to make more songs like this!!

Still - Macy Gray

A song about an abusive relationship and the woman’s attempt to break free of it, but the hold is just too strong…

She’s goes back for a multitude of reasons,

  1. She loves him
  2. They are under the influence
  3. He knows *JUST* how to make her melt.

I know many people have been in such a relationship…doesn’t have to be physically abusive or drug infested but in general, the so-called “toxic relationships” are nothing new to most folk.

I *love* this song because…its just so perfect in its simplicity. It paints the picture of a toxic relationship both the song and story ends without resolution…as with most toxic relationships, someone either walks away for good or they stay.  You know what must be done…but somehow, your heart, mind, body and soul just won’t execute it.

In “Still,” Macy leaves it up to the listener to create their ending. She doesn’t say what happens to the couple…but in my mind, the female lead gets away and takes with her the pain of this relationship with the hopes of beginning anew.
